Inside: Fall is the perfect time to slow down, reflect, and enjoy the season. These eleven slow-living tips are practical, and practicing a few will help you truly embrace the Fall season.

As Summer ends and Fall nears, slow down and reconnect by focusing on how you want to finish the last quarter of the year. At the same time, be proud of what you have achieved so far.

This can be easier by practicing slow living this Fall and beyond.

What is slow living?

Slow living, a concept that has existed for years, is about living at a calmer pace and being more mindful in our daily routines. It involves focusing on one task at a time and valuing quality over quantity.

This mindset helps us align our lives with what truly matters, bringing balance, mental clarity, and less stress in our decisions.

For example, be more mindful throughout the day and enjoy each moment.

From the moment you wake up, wash your face, and brush your teeth, to preparing meals and spending time with your loved ones.

Benefits of slow living

  • Reduce stress and anxiety – embracing slow living at any time of the year helps lower your stress and anxiety by addressing one issue at a time, and helps make better decisions that lead to a calmer mind.

  • Boost overall well-being – slow living encourages self-care practices and healthier habits that help your overall well-being. Enjoying activities like walking or yoga can enhance both physical and mental health.

  • Reduced burnout – practicing slow living habits such as dedicating more time to activities you enjoy, focusing on one task at a time, and establishing simple routines can help decrease burnout.

  • Deeper connections with others – slow living helps strengthen bonds with loved ones through quality time and meaningful conversations. This can result in more fulfilling relationships.

  • Increased focus and productivity – Taking time to slow down can improve your focus and productivity. Practicing mindfulness related to slow living has been shown to boost creative problem-solving skills.

  • Finding joy in simple pleasures – slowing down helps you appreciate the little things. This could include watering your plants, taking an evening walk, sitting outside with your favorite drink, or spending quality time with a loved one.

11 slow living tips to embrace the Fall season

  1. Slow mornings – taking time to relax is an excellent way to welcome the fall season. Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with candlelight and journaling to create a calm atmosphere. Find some quiet time while everyone else in the house is asleep and practice gratitude. If the weather permits, sit outside, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the view. This slow morning can be as little as ten minutes or an hour long, depending on your lifestyle.

  1. Evening wind-down—spending time to relax in the evening can simplify your nighttime routine and promote better sleep. Take a walk without your phone to enjoy the weather and scenery. Start reading a book you’ve been meaning to read but haven’t had the chance to. Savor a hot cup of tea while organizing your tasks for the next day. An evening routine will also help you prepare for the following day.

  1. Sunday Reset — one of my favorite tips for slow living. Plan to enjoy a relaxed Sunday. Wake up mid-morning to have coffee and breakfast with someone you love, away from screens. Take at least two hours for yourself to do what you want, without stressing about the house chores. For example, take a quick nap, grab your favorite drink, and walk around the plant section at Lowe’s. That’s what I enjoy doing. For you, it might be a little different.

  1. Minimal Fall decorations – Having just a few Fall decorations around your home can instantly help you feel in the Fall spirit. This might include pumpkins, autumn leaves, and seasonal color palettes. Use items you already own; there’s no need to buy new decorations. A minimal approach to Fall decorating makes cleaning easier while still making your home feel warm and inviting.

  1. A cozy throw blanket – coziness is something we all enjoy, especially in the Fall. You don’t need many blankets—just one or two in the living room and another on a bedroom accent chair. This way, you can easily grab a throw when you want to read, journal, or sip on a warm drink.

  1. Fall scents – this is also one of my favorite tips for slow living that I look forward to during the Fall season. Diffuse some essential oils with Fall scents in your home. While enjoying some quiet time, light a Fall candle. After you finish cleaning, simmer a pot of Fall scents to make your space not only look clean and tidy but also smell like Fall.

  1. Visit a farmers’ market —strolling through one, especially as it cools down, is a great way to enjoy the Fall season. Check out the homemade items vendors have and pick up some fresh produce.

  1. Eat seasonally – I don’t know about you, but once Fall drinks arrive at coffee shops, I make time to try a Fall drink. I usually stick to my favorites, like pumpkin spice, chai teas, and frappes. Make some Fall desserts at home, such as pumpkin muffins, apple pie, and apple crisps. Try out some simple, seasonal crockpot meals.

  1. “Tech-free” hours — I began implementing tech-free hours years ago, and it has helped me stay more present with my loved ones. Aim for at least thirty minutes to an hour of tech-free time in the morning, early afternoon, and evening, especially during meal times with family. This is one of my favorite slow living tips and one I believe is very important to practice.

  1. Enjoy slow living with others—sharing slow living is the best way to create memories. Take a relaxed walk outdoors, work on seasonal projects, or gather around a bonfire to enjoy some s’mores.

  1. Declutter and create relaxing, cozy spaces – Finally, tidy up your home to make comfortable areas you can truly enjoy this Fall. The last thing you want is to spend time maintaining unnecessary belongings this season or any other. The fewer items you have, the easier it is to clean and stay organized. Start today by decluttering one small space at a time, removing items you don’t need or use, and only keeping what you use.
