10 Simple Steps to Declutter When Feeling Overwhelmed

Also, you do not need to declutter and organize your whole house in a weekend. Start with one space at a time, then move on to another space every month or every other month. As time passes, you may find that some organizing products do not work for your space so that you can use them elsewhere in your home.

As a minimalist and a certified professional organizer, I recommend these ten organizing products to help you save money. The best organizing tools reduce clutter, make items easier to find, and give belongings a “home.”

10 Best Organizing Products That Actually Reduce Clutter

  1. Fabric bins

One of my favorite organizing products is the fabric bins. They can be used in many different spaces in your home, such as the pantry, closet, bathroom, and playroom. They are not only very affordable

le and sturdy, but also come in many colors.

In the pantry, you can store your backstock, dinner boxes, and bottled water. In the bathroom, you can keep extra toilet paper, wipes, and hand towels. In your closet, you can store out-of-season clothing, file-fold your jeans in the fabric bin, and keep important documents.

The possibilities are endless.

  1. Velvet hangers

If you want to start in your bedroom closet on a low budget, begin by decluttering your clothes and using velvet hangers. Velvet hangers instantly save space and make your closet look cohesive. You can purchase them at Walmart or at stores like Burlington or Ross. They come in several colors, and I would choose a neutral one like beige or gray.

  1. Labels

Using labels to organize every space in your home makes it easier for everyone to find items and put them back where they belong. You do not need to buy a label maker. You can find affordable labels at Walmart or Dollar Tree. Labels can be used in the pantry, playroom, closet, on bins, and anywhere else you can think of.

For example, label your bin “medication,” and everyone will know that is where the medication belongs. The same goes for oral care, skincare, body care, toilet paper, snacks, and cleaning products.

  1. Turntables

Also known as lazy Susans, they are a must-have for organizing spaces in your home. They are very affordable and come in a variety of options, including clear, white, and wood, as well as single- or double-tier.

Use them to store your medication in the pantry, your oils, sauces, and peanut butter, and your makeup and skincare products under the sink. Turntables can spin, making it much easier to see and reach items.

  1. Baskets

Whether they are regular or decorative, baskets can be used throughout your home to store a variety of items. Large decorative baskets can hold throw blankets in your living room or bedroom.

Medium-sized baskets can hold toys in a playroom or a kid’s bedroom. Baskets can also be used in a bedroom closet to store flat shoes, freeing up space on your shoe rack.

A small shoe rack can help you keep only your favorite shoes and make it easier to store and find them when you need them. Also, using a shoe rack will make cleaning easier, since all you have to do is lift the rack, sweep or vacuum, and then put it back in its place.

Not only do these vacuum-seal storage bags save space, but they can also be easily stored under the bed. Store off-season clothing and throw blankets. Add the items, vacuum it until it’s tight, and store it under the bed. Be mindful of what you keep; you do not want a bunch of storage bags under the bed.

  1. Storage ottomans

Ottomans are versatile, multi-functional storage pieces that can be used in different areas of your home. They come in different sizes, materials, and colors. Depending on the space, you can use longer ones, and they can also be used for sitting.

In a kid’s bedroom or playroom, use them to store toys. In a bedroom, use them to store away throw blankets or out-of-season clothing. In the living room, store away throw blankets and board games.

Common organizing products mistakes to avoid

  • Buying containers before decluttering

Don’t make the mistake of buying containers before you declutter your space. When you declutter, you are left with the items you use, making it easier to organize your space and likely reducing the number of containers you need.

  • Too many tiny bins

Make sure you measure your space before buying bins, and avoid buying tiny bins. Having too many tiny bins will make your space look cluttered and make it harder to organize.

  • Keeping storage of “just in case” items

When you keep “just in case” items, you are keeping clutter you are unlikely to use, which makes maintaining an organized home more difficult. If you have not used an item in a year, consider decluttering it.
