Inside: If you are tired of constantly having a messy, cluttered home, here are 10 easy frugal living habits for a clutter-free home.
Are you struggling to maintain a clutter-free home? You may also be wasting time looking for items when you are already in a hurry, or worse, wasting money purchasing items you already have but do not know where they are.
This was me many years ago before I started embracing a minimalist and frugal lifestyle. I had a messy and cluttered home, and when people were coming over, I would quickly clean up and shove things into closets and drawers.
Now, I no longer need to rush to clean up when guests are coming. The relief of a clutter-free home brings a profound sense of peace and tranquility.
With a clutter-free home, I have the freedom to invite people over any time of the week, knowing that my space is always ready and welcoming.
A clutter-free home starts with decluttering. Depending on the number of items and how fast you want to declutter, this can take a month or a little longer.
The critical thing to do is to start decluttering. In no time, having a clutter-free home will be simple.

- Low-Buy challenge
Doing a low-buy challenge for a few months, where you limit your non-essential purchases, can help reduce the number of items coming into your home.
This keeps clutter away and saves you money, which you can invest in quality items that truly add value to your life.
- Curbside pickup
Ordering groceries and necessities for curbside pickup saves you time and money and prevents you from spending on unnecessary items.
Going inside the store can easily lead to buying something you do not need. Instead, order what you need online and pick it up curbside, and you will avoid adding clutter to your home.
- Mindful shopping
When you need to make a purchase, practice mindful shopping. Mindful shopping will save you money and reduce the items that become clutter in your home.

- Every item has a home
As someone with a frugal lifestyle, I ensure every item I buy has a place it will always be in. This can help you avoid buying duplicates or items you do not need, which will help you maintain a clutter-free home.
- Change your spending habits
One of my favorite easy frugal living habits is changing my spending habits. Avoid instant gratification, online shopping, or falling for the items on sale, which makes you think you are saving money.
Not buying items you do not need helps you save more money, which helps avoid bringing clutter into your home.
- One in one out rule
Items will always end up in our homes, one way or another. It can be a gift someone bought you for a special occasion or an item you wanted.
When you have an item coming into your home, make it a habit to take one item out.
For example, if you got a new shirt, take one shirt you already have out.
A new home decoration, take out a home decoration you do not enjoy anymore. Doing this will help you maintain a clutter-free home.
- Create a wish list
As someone who lives a minimalist and frugal lifestyle, I create a wish list of items I would like to purchase and spread them throughout the year.
These are wants, not needs. For example, my list of wants includes new houseplants, books, and workout leggings. I spread this throughout the year, saving me money and preventing me from bringing in clutter at once.
- Buy items as needed
Avoid buying bulk or items on sale to save money because some items expire, especially food. If buying in bulk works for you due to a large family, list what you need before buying in bulk.
Buying in bulk or items you do not need will create clutter. For example, purchasing cleaning products because they are on sale and buying more before you finish the cleaning products you already have adds clutter and wastes money. Also, remember that products like makeup or skincare expire once they are opened.
- Shop second-hand first
Buying second-hand first is safer for the environment and saves you money. When you need to buy something like clothes, books, or toys, shopping second-hand can make it easier to let go of the items once you have used them.
We have difficulty letting go of an item because we spend so much on it. For example, it may be easier to donate a book once you are done reading if you pay only a few dollars compared to buying a new one at $16.99.
- Maintain regularly
When you live a frugal lifestyle, you are more mindful of shopping and what you bring into your home. Now, what is left for a clutter-free home is to maintain it.
Do small decluttering sessions twice a year, and always have a donation box in your home where you can quickly add items to donate.
Five-minute resets daily to put everything back into place will instantly create a clutter-free home, giving you the freedom to enjoy your space without the burden of clutter.
