How to Declutter Your Bathroom and Finally Keep it Organized and Clutter-Free
Deciding to declutter any area in your home can feel overwhelming. However, creating a plan, such as starting with the storage areas, then moving to the counter, shower, and decorations, and staying motivated can help make this process much more manageable.
Even though your bathroom is a smaller room, it does not mean it does not collect clutter or become a drop zone.
As someone who started decluttering and organizing their home years ago, I know how difficult it may be to let go of items.
However, the freedom of living in a clutter-free, organized home with only items I use and enjoy is worth the effort. This sense of freedom motivates me to maintain an organized living space.
Steps to declutter your bathroom
- One area at a time
When starting the decluttering process, it is best to start in one area at a time. By starting in one area at a time, you can continue the process as much as possible and stop when needed.
Depending on how many items you have and your time, you can choose to do big declutter sessions or small ones—whatever works best for you.
- Storage areas
I recommend starting in storage areas like under-the-sink cabinets and linen closets. By starting in storage areas, you will remove items and make space for items out in plain sight. When you store items in cabinets or linen closets, you will avoid having a cluttered bathroom counter or shelves.
- Underneath cabinet
Decide if you are keeping, donating, or throwing away as you take out items. You should only keep items you use, love, and enjoy. Donate any unused items you will not use or items you have duplicates of, like curling iron or blow dryer. Trash any expired beauty products or if you did not enjoy the product. This also includes nail polishes.
- Linen closet
Remember that we are decluttering and trying to create a clutter-free space. Keep that in mind while decluttering extra linen sheets, towels, and hand towels. In our household, we do not have extra linen sheets since I wash our bedsheets, and as soon as they are done, I put them back on. We have a guest room, and I do the same when guests come and go.
Decide if two or three towels and hand towels per family member are enough. We keep two per family member and three in the extra bathroom for guests. You can declutter expired medicine, cleaning products you do not use, and any items you do not use or enjoy.
- Bathroom counter
The bathroom counter should be clutter-free to keep it clean and tidy. If you keep skincare, makeup, or personal hygiene on the counter, make space in drawers or use some wall shelves.
Declutter or keep any decoration on the bathroom counter minimal. You can keep hand soap on the counter and some towels to dry your hands. This will make it super simple to clean the counter.
- Shower
Here, you should remove any products that might be expired that you do not use or enjoy. Remove duplicates of products and old washcloths or loofahs that can collect bacteria. Keep your shower with minimal products that you use often and enjoy.
- Decorations
You may have some wall decorations that you no longer enjoy or are not your style anymore. Now is the time to remove them; keep one of your favorites. If you use shelves to store bathroom products and decorations, keep both minimal.
- Everything off the floor
I suggest you remove everything that may be on the floor. If you have a weight scale, place it in the closet. If you have a hamper for dirty clothes, make space in your closet for the hamper. Doing so will simplify It when it is time to clean.
Tips to keep your bathroom organized and clutter-free
Now that you have decluttered your bathroom, it is time to organize it. I suggest that you use what you already have in your bathroom or if you find organizing items around your home.
There is no need to purchase organizing products if you are on a budget. If you buy some containers and bins, measure the areas before purchasing them.
- Containers and bins
Using containers and bins can help you keep your items contained. It will also make your space look less messy and make it easier to find an item.

Keep all your like items together. All your oral care, body care, and beauty care go together. Same with your towels and hand towels. This will make it easier to know when you are running low on products.
- Label
You do not need to buy an expensive label maker if you do not have the budget for it. You can find some less expensive chalk labels at the dollar store. Labeling the containers and bins makes it easier for everyone else to know where items are and where they belong.
- Every item has a home
All the items in the bathroom, cabinets, and linen closets need a place or a home. They will be stored away in the same place all the time when you are done using them. If you do not find a place for the item, consider decluttering it.
- Do not buy bulk
Depending on your family size and needs, this may not work for everyone. But when you can avoid buying items in bulk, avoid filling up cabinets and linen closets. When you buy in bulk, you may forget what items you have and buy what you do not need.
- Finish products before purchasing more
Do not purchase products like skincare, body care, or personal hygiene until you are almost out of the product. If you decide to have backstock, do not have more than one backstock.
Finishing up the product before you buy more saves you money, and you do not waste any product. You also avoid any product from expiring. Make-up expires in less than one year, most of the time.

- Instead of putting it down, put it away
When you walk in and need to put down an item, put it where it belongs—not on the bathroom floor, counter, or in your bedroom. For example, your dirty clothes go straight into the hamper, and the hand towels go back on the hand towel holder when you’re done using them. Doing this will save you time and make cleaning easier.
- Cleaning Routine
Create a cleaning routine, so you know what day you are cleaning your bathrooms. A simple routine with one cleaning task daily will take less time. Also, create a routine that works for you. You can read my simple cleaning routine here.
