10 Benefits of an Organized Home Plus 10 Tips to Get Started

benefits of organized homeThere are so many benefits to being organized and having an organized home. We spend plenty of time in our homes after work, evenings, and weekends, or if you are a stay-at-home parent or work from home.

That is why creating an environment we enjoy without all the messiness should be a priority.

Being organized and having an organized home will help simplify your life in many ways.

If you are tired of an unorganized home and feel overwhelmed due to all the mess and clutter, it is time to get organized.

Here, I will go over ten benefits of having an organized home, plus ten tips to get you started.

10 Benefits of an Organized Home

  1. Less time cleaning

One of my favorite benefits is spending less time cleaning. Clear counters allow for quick wipedowns. The fewer items on counters, the less you need to move them to clean underneath them and the actual items.

Clear floors make sweeping or vacuuming simpler. If you have a baby or toddler and the toys are organized in the play area, you will spend less time picking toys up. An organized closet and dresser will lead to fewer clothes and less time doing laundry, folding, and putting away.

  1. Everything has a home

When you have an organized home, every item has its own home or a place where it belongs—no more losing items. Remote controls belong in the same place all the time. Tools are in the same place, all medicine is in the same place, etc.

You will no longer need to ask family members where certain items are and vice versa. The items are where they belong, making it easier to find items.

  1. Saves money

Having an organized home will also save you money. Since every item has a home, you know exactly what you have, and there will be no need to re-purchase an item. Not having to re-purchase a misplaced item will also help you avoid creating clutter.

  1. More free time

Since you will be spending less time cleaning you will have more free time. All items have a place where they belong, you will spend less time looking for items when you need to leave the house. Also, you will spend less time organizing; all you need to do is maintain your items.

  1. Avoid visual clutter

Visual clutter is all the items you see in an area of your home that make it look messy and unorganized. For example, kitchen appliances you don’t use daily, a stack of mail, and decorations. You may not realize how much visual clutter can affect our mental health.

Research shows that clutter and disorganization affect our brains. If we do not have order, the visual reminders of disorganization drain our cognitive resources, reducing our ability to focus.

  1. Reduce stress

Living in a cluttered and unorganized home makes it hard to relax. Looking around and noticing all the work that needs to be done can make it challenging to feel calm. Simplifying and organizing our homes can help reduce stress and promote a sense of calm.

  1. Better sleep

Getting a whole night’s sleep is very important to our well-being. A messy, unorganized bedroom can make It difficult to get the sleep you need.

You will also worry about what needs to be picked up and put away. Studies have shown that people with clean bedrooms can sleep better.

So, if you are struggling with falling asleep, try to keep your bedroom clean and tidy.

  1. Cozy environment

You can create a cozy environment in your home when you have an organized home. You can leave out items to make your home cozy when all the items that make a space look messy are where they belong. A throw pillow, a lamp, and a diffuser can all help make the rooms in your home cozy and not cluttered.

  1. Enjoy the company

No more having to panic and clean when a friend or family texts and asks if they can come over and visit. You can also have last-minute plans and will feel relaxed about having people over.

Since you have an organized home, things will be in place. You might need a quick reset that will take you very little time.

  1. Aesthetically pleasing

An organized home can be aesthetically pleasing. Creating one can be very simple. Removing all the items you do not use or enjoy and keeping the items you love in an organized environment will make your home look aesthetically pleasing.

Tips to Start Organizing Your Home

Now that you know a few benefits of having an organized home, here are a few tips to get you started.

  1. Set goals

You need to set a goal for how you want your home to look in a few months or a year. Why do you want to have a clean and organized home? Which areas need more work, and which do not?

Give yourself a timeline to achieve how you want your home to look and feel. Like with any goal, if you get off track, get back on track as soon as possible until you reach your end goal.

  1. Declutter

Decluttering is a must if you want an organized home. Not only will it give you more space, but it will also make organizing a lot easier. You can declutter one area at a time, and I suggest starting with the kitchen.

If you want fast results, try my 21-day declutter challenge here or The 30-day Minimalist Challenge by The Minimalist Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus. On day one, declutter one item; on day two, declutter two items; on day three, declutter three items; and so on. By the end of the 30 days, you will have decluttered 500 items.

  1. One area at a time

To see progress and avoid losing motivation, start by decluttering one area at a time. After you have decluttered one area, move on to another.

  1. Storage spaces

When you start in an area at a time, start with any storage spaces like cabinets, drawers, or closets. This will open space for visible items, like a toaster oven, blender, or knife set. You can then place those items in storage spaces to avoid visual clutter. When items are out of sight, an area looks clean and organized.

  1. Bins and baskets

There is no need to go and buy bins, containers, or baskets to organize your home. Try to use what you have first.

Utilizing these organization items will keep them in their place and make them look organized. You can also try getting items at a great price from the Dollar Store, Dollar General, or Home Goods.

I worked on one area per month on a budget and did not spend much money on bins and containers.

  1. Ask a friend or family member for help

Ask someone you know for help. This can be a great way to spend time with someone you love without spending money. Having someone help you can keep you accountable and motivated.

  1. Stay motivated

The days will come and go, and things will always come up. You might forget your goal of an organized home. Find ways to stay motivated. I love watching YouTube videos of decluttering and organizing, and then I get up and start decluttering while listening to the video.

Store before and after pictures in an album on your phone. Looking at the photos will clearly show you how much progress you have made, keeping you motivated to continue.

  1. Find what works for you

With so many organizing items available, it can be difficult to find what works for your home or what you like. That is why I suggest working in one area at a time, and if you are on a budget, purchase once every month or every other month.

After a few weeks, you might find that specific containers do not work in one area, so you can use them in another area. Tips to start organizing your home. Tip number 8 is to find what works for you. We all have different lives and items and what might work for someone else may not work for you.

  1. Maintain

Organizing is not a one time and done. You will need to keep maintaining your home organized.

Place the latest items in your backstock when you are low on an item and purchase a new one.

Once you are out of an item, remove the container and replace it from your backstock. Do not leave empties or almost empty items around. Please get rid of them as soon as possible.

  1. Get professional help

If you lack time or have lived in your home for many years and have too many items, you can hire a professional to help you.

Hiring a professional organizer can help you get started and leave you with a plan to continue on your own if you are on a budget.
