10 Simple Minimalist Bedroom Ideas on a Tight Budget

minimalist bedroomHas your bedroom become a drop zone, where you leave items on the floor, chair, or bed as soon as you walk in?

These items create clutter and can make a bedroom look messy. The good thing is that creating a serene, minimalist bedroom doesn’t require a significant investment.

A simple minimalist bedroom on a budget can instantly make your room feel open, airy, and cozy.

There is no need to spend a lot of money to create a space of calm where you can enjoy a good night’s sleep.

As a minimalist, I find the simplicity of a minimalist bedroom reassuring. Maintaining and keeping a minimalist bedroom clean and tidy is easy.

Benefits of creating a simple minimalist bedroom

The benefits of a simple minimalist bedroom are numerous and inspiring.

They can motivate you to live with less of what you do not need, leaving you with only what you need.

These benefits include promoting better sleep, reducing cleaning time, and creating more space for relaxation and personal activities.

  1. Promote better sleep— A clutter-free bedroom can make your space calm and peaceful, promoting better sleep. A bedroom with electrical items like a television or phone can make it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep.

  1. Less time cleaning—With fewer items in your bedroom, you will spend less time cleaning, dusting, picking up, and maintaining them.

  1. More space—A minimalist bedroom will give you more space. You’ll have more space to walk freely or create a cozy corner to read a book.

Tips to decorate on a tight budget

  1. Use what you have

You do not need to start buying new items to create a minimalist bedroom. Look around your home and see if you can use some of your items to give it a new look. These items can include wall décor, throw pillows, or throw blankets.

  1. Gently use items

Second-hand stores can be great places to find wall art, decorative bins, or furniture if you need it. Look for items in good condition that you can easily incorporate into your bedroom’s design. Buying gently used items will save you money, give them a second chance, and avoid ending up in the landfill.

  1. Set a budget

If you want to buy a few items to refresh your bedroom, set a budget first. You may want new curtains or bedding; setting a budget can help you not overspend.

Keep in mind that simplicity is key to creating a minimalist bedroom.

  1. Declutter

Decluttering is the first step towards creating a space we can truly enjoy. It’s a process that brings a sense of accomplishment as we remove items that do not bring us joy.

This may take a little longer, depending on how many items you have in your bedroom. Do not let that discourage you; begin the decluttering process. I know you will be glad you did.

After decluttering your bedroom and removing unnecessary items, now is the best time to do a deep clean.

Cleaning will help you refresh your bedroom. You will be surprised how much dirt is left behind after decluttering your space.

  1. Neutral color palette

Having a neutral color palette, which typically includes shades of white, off-white, or light gray, makes it easier to transition from seasons if that is what you enjoy doing.

Personally, we leave our bedroom neutral and change the seasons twice a year instead of four times a year.

A neutral color palette makes it easier to style and creates a clean, airy, peaceful atmosphere in your bedroom.

  1. Natural lighting

Opening the window curtains as soon as daylight will allow natural light to improve your room’s aesthetic.  It will make your bedroom feel airy and more spacious. Natural sunlight enhances your mood and helps you start your day positively.

  1. Hide items

If you have items that can be hidden and do not need to be in plain sight, go ahead and hide them. For example, I do not have a side table in our bedroom and keep my book underneath the bed.

If you do not have a side table, you can use a memory box to store items like a book, journal, reading glasses, or hand cream underneath your side of the bed. Phone chargers, shoes, or handbags can also be hidden.

  1. Light color bedding

For a minimalist bedroom, choose bedding for its simplicity and high-quality materials. Clean lines and simple designs with solid colors or subtle patterns can create a calming visual environment. Purchasing high-quality cotton sheets will promote better sleep and will last longer, saving you money.

  1. Plant for decorations

Some plants do not require plenty of light and are low maintenance. Studies show that plants can improve air quality. Some of my favorite easy-to-take-care-of plants that you can add to your bedroom are a snake plant or lavender.

Snake plants are a household favorite, and adding one to your bedroom can be beneficial. Snake plants produce oxygen at night and remove carbon dioxide during the day, which helps improve air quality.

Lavender oil is a remedy for sleepless nights, so a lavender plant in a bedroom would be perfect. The pleasant scent also helps keep mosquitos out.Minimalist bedroom ideas. A snake plant on the floor next to a window.

  1. Accent chair

Keeping one accent chair in your bedroom can help create a nice, cozy space to unwind with a cup of tea while reading a book. Placing it next to a window is perfect for an accent chair. Avoid using this chair as a drop zone to keep your room tidy.

  1. Decorative basket for storage

Using multi-purpose items can help you make use of your space. Decorative baskets can store throw pillows when you are going to sleep or a throw blanket when not in use.

An ottoman is also great for multi-purpose use in your bedroom. It can store throw blankets or throw pillows and be used for extra seating.

  1. Throw blanket

We all need at least one throw blanket to snuggle and make any space feel cozy. Having a throw blanket on top of the end of our bed on top of our sheets is a great way to style a bedroom without cluttering. You can lay the blanket on the accent chair, making snuggling easier while reading a book.

However, to make it easier to maintain, I do not recommend having more than one cozy blanket in your bedroom.

  1. Diffuser

Having a decorative diffuser in your bedroom can help your bedroom look minimal.

Adding essential oils to your decorative diffuser will make your bedroom smell good and create an ambiance. You can change scents by seasons or the mood you are trying to create. For a mood bust, you can diffuse peppermint, and for sleep, you can use lavender.

How to maintain a minimalist bedroom

Maintaining a minimalist bedroom requires minimal effort after you declutter.

Avoid adding furniture or new items to your bedroom. If you do plan on adding something new, follow the one-in-one-out rule. For every item you bring in, you must take one out.

Make it a habit to do a daily five-minute reset in your bedroom. This includes putting everything back where it belongs.

You must make your bed every morning. When you do, your bedroom will instantly look tidy.

Final thoughts

Creating a simple minimalist bedroom does not take much time or money. You should make a space that works for you and that you will enjoy.

A minimalist bedroom will be easy to achieve by decluttering and removing items that you do not use or enjoy, leaving only items that serve a purpose.

Applying the tips above will help you create and maintain a minimalist bedroom, which will be easy to clean, give you more space, and promote better sleep.
