15 Simple Tips to Declutter Your Bedroom for Better Sleep

Declutter your bedroomDid you know a messy, cluttered bedroom can affect how we fall asleep and stay asleep? According to sleep expert and owner of Bed Guru, “It is important to remember how much our environment can affect our sleep. A messy and cluttered bedroom will affect how fast you fall asleep and the quality of your sleep.”

Your bedroom may not be a priority since usually your guests do not go in your bedroom. However, keeping your bedroom tidy and clutter-free is crucial for promoting a good night’s sleep and a more peaceful mind, helping you to relax and unwind.

As someone who started a decluttering journey years ago, I know it can take time to create a home we can enjoy. But by applying these tips to declutter your bedroom, you will have a clean bedroom to promote better sleep in no time.

Benefits of a clutter-free and tidy bedroom.

A clutter-free bedroom can improve relaxation and enhance the overall ambiance. It also has plenty of benefits, including a more peaceful mind and easier to clean.

  1. Better sleep—A clutter-free and tidy bedroom can reduce stress and promote relaxation, which leads to better-quality sleep.
  2. Improve mental health—By reducing stress levels and improving sleep and focus throughout the day, you can take control of your environment and well-being.
  3. More time—You will spend less time cleaning and organizing, leaving you with more time to practice self-care, like reading a book or skincare before bedtime.

15 simple tips to declutter your bedroom

  1. Bulky furniture

I don’t know about you, but when we purchased our bedroom set, it had a huge horizontal dresser and a mirror. If you have a horizontal dresser, you should declutter it, especially if it has become your drop zone.

By decluttering the dresser, you avoid keeping clutter on it, save time cleaning it, and open up more space for you. Declutter your clothes in the drawers and put them in your closet. You can read my blog post on How to Organize a Small Closet on a Low Budget.

  1.  Side table

Remove one side table if you use it as a drop zone. So where can you put all your items on the side table? You can place them underneath the bed. For example, I keep a book, headphones, and a journal underneath my bed. When I jump into bed, I grab my book and read it. Once I am done, I place it underneath my bed. Removing the side table saves time on cleaning, and your room will look tidy.

  1.  Television

Decluttering your television from your room may be a little difficult, especially if you like to relax while watching television. But by removing the television, you are promoting a better night’s sleep for you and your loved one. It would be best to avoid screen time at least one hour before bed to fall asleep and stay asleep. Instead of watching TV before bed, you can read a book, journal, or talk with your significant other before bed.

  1.  Underneath your bed

Even though the clutter underneath your bed may not be visible, decluttering underneath your bed will promote better sleep. The clutter you have underneath your bed is also a silent to-do list. I finally took the time to declutter the items. One of the items was my wedding dress.

It took up too much space in our small closet, so I stored it underneath our bed. I donated the dress, and now I am relieved that I do not have clutter underneath the bed. You can read How the Silent To-Do List Distracts Us From What Really Matters.

      5.  Wall decorations

You should declutter any wall decorations that are not your style or that you no longer enjoy. By keeping your walls minimal, your bedroom will look clean and tidy, and you will spend less time cleaning the wall decorations.

  1.  Extra throw pillows and blankets

We enjoy a cozy blanket on our bed, and throw pillows can help make your bedroom look and feel cozy. However, by removing extra throw pillows and blankets, your bedroom will instantly look clean and tidy. Keep one throw blanket per family member and throw pillows no more than two to make your room feel and look cozy.

  1. Laundry hamper in closet

Keeping your dirty laundry out of sight will make your bedroom look clean and tidy. Keeping your laundry hamper in your closet is best to avoid cluttering your bedroom or bathroom. Make it a habit that when you remove your clothes, it goes straight into the hamper and not on the floor. Creating this habit will save you time picking up dirty clothes later in the day.

  1. One accent chair

I do not know about you, but I enjoy drinking my coffee and reading a book by the window in my bedroom. Avoid adding more than one chair in your bedroom to keep the chairs from becoming a drop zone. Having one accent chair to relax will make your room more spacious and clutter-free.

  1. Exercise equipment

If you have exercise equipment in your bedroom, now is the best time to declutter it. If you still use it, find another area in your home to place your exercise equipment. You can also try to do other forms of exercise that do not require the equipment.

By decluttering the exercise equipment from your bedroom, you create an environment promoting better sleep. Also, you avoid using the equipment as a drop zone for clothes.

  1. Sentimental items

Letting go of sentimental items can be very difficult. I kept my daughters’ school projects and school photos for many years. I decluttered sentimental items little by little as it would get easier. Try to declutter these items at your own pace.

  1. Workspace

This tip applies if you work from home or have an area in your bedroom as an office space. Moving your workspace to another area of your home, not the bedroom, is best to keep work out of the bedroom. Doing so will help you end your workday and be ready for activities that do not involve work.

Your bedroom is a place to unwind, relax, and sleep; it is not meant for a workspace. You can use a small area in your dining room or living room for a workspace.

  1. Everything from the floor

Remove everything that you have from the floor area in your bedroom. Clothes, bins, and baskets only keep items you need and use, such as an ottoman. The ottoman can be great for storing throw blankets or in between clothes that are not dirty, but you used for a few hours.

An ottoman is very functional and can also be used for sitting. Removing everything off the floor opens up your bedroom, making cleaning easier when needed.

  1.  Items that do not belong

Items that do not belong in the bedroom can be your children’s toys, pet toys, or seasonal items. Make space in your home to store these items. Remember, your bedroom is a place to relax and get a good night’s sleep, so removing these items will be helpful.

  1. Thin, see-through window blinds

Now is the best time to declutter the thin, see-through window blinds to some that block daylight. There are options with different colors, and if you enjoy a light color to make your bedroom look spacious, make sure they block sunlight. Having blinds that block the sunlight can help you get enough sleep or catch up on sleep.

  1. Declutter regularly

Decluttering is not a one-time time, and you are done; you will need to do decluttering sessions till you have a bedroom that you love and get a good night’s sleep. You can declutter weekly for 10-15 minutes, and you will be surprised at how much you can remove quickly.

How to keep your bedroom clutter-free and tidy

After all the work you put in to declutter your bedroom for better sleep, here are a few tips to keep it clutter-free.

  1. Every item has a home

Every item in your bedroom should have a place or home where it always belongs. As soon as you walk into your bedroom, place items where they belong. For example, your shoes belong in the closet on the shoe rack, and your dirty clothes belong in the hamper in your closet. If you have items that do not have a place, find a home for them or declutter them.

  1. One in one out rule

When you purchase a new item, you must remove one item. If you add a new throw blanket, you need to declutter a throw blanket. You buy a new book, then declutter a book you already read. By applying the one-in-one-out rule, you maintain your bedroom and not create a cluttered one.

  1. Make your bed

You hear this all the time to make your bed. But taking a few minutes to make your bed every day will make your room look instantly tidy.
